Facts about German Language
German is a West Germanic language, related to English, Dutch, and Frisian. It’s the official language of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German is also one of the 23 official languages of the European Union.
German is spoken by about 100 million people worldwide. About 75 million people speak German as their first language, and about 25 million people speak German as a second language.
German is the third most popular foreign language taught in schools, after English and French. In fact, German is the most popular foreign language in Europe!
German has many dialects, but the standard form of German is called Hochdeutsch (High German). Hochdeutsch is spoken in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. And these are only a few facts about German language!
1. German is a challenging language to learn
German has three genders – masculine, feminine, and neuter. This can be confusing for English speakers, because the gender of a word doesn’t always match the gender of the object it’s referring to. For example, the German word for “girl” (das Mädchen) is neuter, even though it refers to a female person.
German has some interesting words that don’t have a direct translation in English. For example, the word “Schadenfreude” describes the feeling of happiness or satisfaction that comes from seeing someone else fail or experience misfortune.
German is known for being a very precise language. This is reflected in the fact that there are many long words in German. In fact, the longest German word ever recorded is 189,391 letters long!
2. German has a rich history
Another one of many fun facts about the German language: German is one of the oldest languages still spoken today. It’s thought to have originated around 500 BC.
The first written record of German is from the year AD 96, in a document called the “Rheinische Frohmesang” (Rhine Song of Joy). This document is a poem written in Old High German.
German has been influenced by many other languages over the centuries, including Latin, French, and English. As a result, there are many words in German that are similar to words in other languages. For example, the German word for “dog” (der Hund) is very similar to the English word “hound”.
German culture is well known for its love of music and poetry. Some of the most famous composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, were German. And some of the most famous poets in history, such as Goethe and Schiller, wrote in German.
3. German is a beautiful language
German sometimes gets a bad rap because people assume that it is a harsh-sounding language. The German language does include a lot of consonant sounds. However, conversational German can sound very charming. Think of a German person speaking English. The sound

For example, the word “Freude” (joy) can be combined with the word “schön” (beautiful) to create the word “Schadenfreude” (the feeling of joy or satisfaction that comes from seeing someone else fail or experience misfortune). Such a word requires a long phrase in English to adequately express. See, isn’t German a beautiful language?
4. German combines words to create more precise meaning
German also has a lot of compound words, which are created by combining two or more shorter words. For example, the German word for “airplane” (das Flugzeug) is made up of the words “Flug” (flight) and “Zeug” (thing).
Compound words are very common in German, and they can be a great way to express yourself. Just be careful not to combine too many words, or you’ll end up with a word that’s so long it’s impossible to pronounce!
