Protein French Toast Recipe (Anabolic French Toast Recipe)

If you have trouble rolling out of bed in the morning, this is just the thing for you. Who doesn’t love a delicious breakfast first thing in the morning? Classic French toast is tasty but the high carb white bread and sugar can make you feel drowsy rather than energetic and ready to start your day. Luckily, a tasty low carb version is easy to make.

A high protein breakfast option is protein French toast made with your favorite protein powder! Depending on the type of bread you use, you can even add in extra protein.

The key to this high-protein breakfast is a sturdy bread. Some great options include: Ezekiel bread, Dave’s killer bread. Both of these can make great French toast sticks while still delivering a healthy breakfast with 25 grams of protein!

Although French toast might be your favorite breakfast, healthy recipes can be enjoyed any time of the day. It certainly makes a great breakfast, but protein-packed meals like this one also make a nice dinner. Who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner? The cinnamon vanilla aroma will fill your kitchen and put a smile on your face!

And not only is this meal healthy, it’s also a very quick meal prep! Within about ten minutes you can have fresh, healthy French toast. So let’s get right to work.

Recipe

Recipe makes 3 servings. Nutritional information: 270 calories, 15 g fat, 17 g carb, 8 g fiber, 25 g protein

Ingredients

Cooking spray (olive oil or coconut oil)

6 slices whole wheat bread or low-carb bread of choice

2 large whole eggs

1/2 cup egg whites (or 3 egg whites)

2 Tbsp flaxseed meal

1/4 cup protein powder of choice (I prefer vanilla but use what you like)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup almond milk

2 Tbsp natural sweetener (Monk fruit is a nice option)

1 teaspoon cinnamon

*Optional toppings *

Fresh fruit

Sugar-free syrup

Almond butter

Greek yogurt

Peanut butter

How to Make the Best Protein French Toast:

  1. In a large bowl mix together the whole eggs (or remove the egg yolks if you prefer more protein), egg whites, flaxseed meal, protein powder, almond milk, sweetener (if using), cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Whisk until the white mixture is well combined.
  2. If you are using a specialty high-protein bread that is kept in the freezer, such as Ezekiel, make sure to leave it out to thaw. Alternatively, you can heat the bread in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place some parchment paper on a baking sheet and heat the slices bread for several minutes until they are golden brown and slightly crisp on the outside. Transfer to a paper towel and let cool slightly.
  3. Next, let the bread soak in the egg mixture to absorb the batter. Depending on how sturdy the bread is, you may want to alternatively put the bread slice in a small bowl and pour the French toast batter over the slice of bread before transferring it to the pan.
  4. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat to medium-high heat. Use some oil spray before placing the French toast in the non-stick pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on one side, or until golden brown, then flip to the other side and cook 1-2 minutes.

Another great option is to cook the French toast with an air fryer! Using the air fryer will make a crispy French toast without any extra oil needed.

Now comes the best part: time to enjoy! The fun part about this recipe is that you can put any type of toppings you like on this: nut butter, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, or even chocolate chips if you want to make it more decadent.

Storing, Serving, and Reheating

After making this recipe, you can store any leftovers for later in an airtight container for up to three days in the fridge or longer in the freezer.

Another great way to prepare a delicious protein rich breakfast: overnight oats. You can soak the oats in a similar protein powder mixture so that they can absorb the same flavors: vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar free maple syrup. Just another delicious way to get in up to 25 g protein in the morning!
